Nathan Hughes - 'Absurd Frontier', Scratch Art Space

Image
Last night Yianni and I popped out to see a show in Surry Hills but it turned out to be a dining event not an opening. We did a quick search in the street and I came up with a show in Marrickville. Once we decided that we could get there in less then half an hour we jumped in the car and headed off. The parking in Marrickville is horrendous but eventually I found a space across the street from the gallery. It was so strange to then bump into my old framer Jochen Letsch. Honestly I hadn't seen him for about 15 years. He used to have a studio in Annandale. I could always rely on good work. He sold that business and moved on to other things. Now he says he's about to open the Brisbane office of a major conservator. I quite liked Hughes' works but they seemed a bit under considered upon second thought. I did respond positively to the poppey vibe, the use of text, and the sort of outback aesthetic.

Michael Shirley at Shop Gallery

Image
This evening I scooted out in the car to Glebe and the Shop Gallery to see Michael's photos. You can see behind me some nature photos. These are black and white and very lovely. Other photos are in colour like this 70s shot of a woman next to a train stopped at a station. It's Central Station.  It's hard to see the details in this photo of mine because of the size. The photo contains humour because of the classification "Sleeping" along the roof edge of the carriage. Like the woman is actually sleeping even though she's walking with her suitcase. I didn't stay long and sid Hi to Michael, who had put a notice on Facebook earlier in the day.

Tiliqua Tiliqua print show

Image
I was out at Roslyn Oxley last night with Yianni and though it was a spur of the moment thing I had a good time so today it being sunny I went out on the bus to Enmore. Tiliqua Tiliqua's print show had been advertised but I hadn't remembered it was on before getting to the gallery. The reason I went there was because I had something I wanted to talk with the operators about. I bought one print (not the one shown here). Had chats with some of the exhibited artists, found soft drink, and ate some cheese and crackers. Kate Riley had a mezzotint in the show and because I didn't know how it was made she explained the method to me and another artist there. It was a nice afternoon.

Dominik Mersch: Strange New Worlds

Image
Sorry about the delay I've been anticipating and then looking after the Yokohama Four and only had a chance to sit down quietly tonight. I went to Dominik Mersch at the beginning of July with Yianni. I like the Poppy colours and humour of these works. We actually went to about eighdt shows in one night, it was a Thursday. Lorenzo Pompa, 'Expansion' Johanna Flammer, 'Glockenblumenblau' I can't work out is Flammer's painting title is meant to be silly o serious, but anyway the work uses collage (as do I) so that's the main thing.
